Daniel Boone Homestead
Berks County, PA, 11.6.’24
Birthplace and childhood home of frontier legend Daniel Boone for the first 16 years of his life.
The original structure—the house in which Daniel Boone was born—was a single-story wooden cabin built by Squire upon purchase of the property. Squire constructed a stone basement over a spring to offer fresh water for drinking and cleaning. Eventually, Squire would add a stone attachment to accommodate his growing family (Daniel was the sixth child of eleven). The elder Boone would eventually relocate his family to North Carolina but not before transferring the ownership of the homestead to a relative, William Maugridge of Philadelphia. A wealthy merchant, Maugridge completely renovated the house by removing the original wooden walls of the cabin, replacing them with stone (a visibly noticeable alteration down the middle of the exterior), and adding a second floor. The De Turk family purchased the property following Maugridge’s passing in 1766. A marker on the site notes the burial of several members of the De Turk family on the property, most noticeably the graves of John and Samuel DeTurk, with Revolutionary War Veteran headstones.
Daniel Boone would make a return visit to the property in his later life.
